Remembering and Letting Go

On this Memorial Day, I would like to put forward a few thoughts based on my personal experiences with war veterans and other people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I do not claim to know or understand what you have endured. What I do claim to know is that there are ways to release those things that continue to bind you to the past.
I have written before about defense systems and force fields. People who have experienced the horrors of war first hand have some of the most powerful and debilitating defenses human beings can create. Likewise this is often true for those who have experienced some other form of trauma where they experienced their very existence was at stake in a very intense way. It’s understandable that these circumstances would generate very powerful defenses.
And yet, once the threat has passed, most of the defenses created in these trying circumstances continue to operate and pull some energy from the power core of each of person who has experienced them. The creation and maintenance of these defenses reduces personal energy and the ability to perceive what is really going on in various circumstances. These defenses also cause people to live way too cautiously for their own good and for the good of all.
In a blog post, I’m not going to be able to tell you how to set yourself free from these traumas that cause so much suffering. This post is to give you hope as someone who has seen people set free from their inner demons.
Here are a few things I would like to share as you consider the possibilities for releasing that which holds you back from living a life of complete and total freedom and trust.
- It takes as long as it takes.
- Release, when it happens, happens in an instant.
- There are layers and aspects to our defenses. Clear one. Allow the next to surface. Clear that one. Repeat! Repeat!! Repeat!
- You are not alone in your suffering. There are thousands of people (if not millions) currently carrying burdens very similar to yours.
- You need not fear forgetting anything. You will remember what happened without feeling the negative feelings associated with those memories. You will also be able to see more of the good that existed in those circumstances once the defenses are gone. What a gift!
- There is hope. Eventually everything impermanent must give way to that which is permanent. When we allow this to happen, everything changes forever.
You don’t have to believe me. You don’t have to trust me. You don’t have to do anything. I’m here to give you hope. When you are ready, the responses to your questions will come to set you free from that which ties you to the past. You deserve freedom. For those of you who suffer because of your decision to serve the cause of freedom, isn’t it time you allowed yourself to be set free as well? For those of you who suffer because of the exercise of human free will, isn’t it time for you to experience real freedom as well?
May we all be set free from the shackles of the past. And in our freedom, may we serve other suffering souls generously from hearts overflowing with compassion. Together we can help each other heal. Together we can change everything for the better.
