Last night I watched the movie Fearless. It was directed by Peter Weir. Jeff Bridges, Isabella Rossellini, and Rosie Perez starred in the film. It was deep, spiritual, moving, personal, and just absolutely wonderful. The story centers around the lives of two survivors of a plane crash. Before the crash, Max Klein was afraid to fly. After the crash, he claims to have no more fear.

Ironically (for me anyway) the film came out in the same year that I had a powerful experience that gave me a taste of fearlessness myself. For three days I lived without fear of anything or anyone (at least as far as I remember).

If you have been paying attention to this blog, you’ll notice that I am really big on releasing fears with the goal of fearlessness. Here, I’d like to self-dislose what’s been going on with me lately to give you an idea of how deep our fears really do run.

In 1993 I experienced what I believe to be a form of fearlessness that faded after 3 days. It 1997 I discovered a methodology for becoming fearless on a 24-7-365.25 basis that I have been practicing ever since that time with absolute fearlessness as part of my goal. Lately I have made a lot of progress toward my goal of fearlessness to the point where most fears that come up for me can be cleared very easily and effortlessly. Some need a bit more time and attention to release.

Despite all of the time, attention and energy I have put into the realization of my goal, I still have deep-seated fears that require healing and release. Fearless revealed another to me last night. Toward the end of the movie, another survivor says to Max Klein something like, “You can’t save everyone, Max.” In hearing those words, I realized that I was continuing to suffer from a fear that I had not yet completely released.

In that moment I saw myself more clearly. In that statement, I recognized that I had been feeling a kind of pressure to save everybody. This is a fear that for me is related to a few different things.

All of my life I have been afraid that I was not good enough, that I was not worthy of the biological real estate I had been blessed to inhabit (not unlike most or all of you reading this I’m guessing). Connected to this fear was the sense that I needed to do something of importance or significance in order to earn the right to claim my right to exist within the tiny swatch of the universe I call home. Underneath this was a lack of trust in myself, others, and God. I did not trust that God had not made a mistake in creating me. I did not trust that I was good enough because God had made me. I did not trust that just being myself and doing what I truly wanted to do was enough. No. I needed to do more. I needed to do God’s job of saving everyone. I needed to accomplish God’s job of saving the world for myself and by myself.

Thanks to Fearless, I have let go a bit more of my stranglehold on the idea that it is my job to save the world. I now have given myself a bit more permission to trust that God really does know what God is doing. Of course part of the reason I am here is to become saved and to help God with the work of saving others from the fears that hide their true magnificence. Of course I am to do the absolute best I can through my work and my being.

The difference is that when I can do these things with absolute faith and trust that God will pick up where my efforts fall short, I will be truly free and absolutely fearless. Because it does not all hinge upon me. Nothing depends solely upon me. I am a human being with the blessings that accompany existence as a created being.

I can trust God to do everything that I cannot do. I can trust God and others to do what is necessary. There’s no need to push, or force, or rush. There is now every reason to trust. My prayer right now is that each and every one of us may move more consciously into living from a place of faith, love, hope, peace, and joy. May we all do our best to support one another despite our fears until we can recognize that they are no longer necessary.

Do our fears and defenses really keep us safe, or do they just attract more of the same? How can we see threats and opportunities clearly if we are looking at the world though peepholes? If you want to live an expansive life, you must let go of your fears and your defenses!

To live a life without limits or constraints, we must become defenseless. Defenselessness is the state of being where a person does not have any defenses against potential threats. The defenseless person also does not need to create new defenses in the face of what most people would call dangers, threats, accidents, disasters, etc. I would like to suggest using other words and phrases when referring to these types circumstances—perhaps opportunities for learning, love, or growth; challenging circumstances or even blessings. Call me crazy. I can take it.

So, what are the benefits of becoming defenseless?

Life without defense is a life without limits. When we are defending against anything, some of our energy and attention is going to maintain the defense against some scary thing. This also means that we continue to attract scary circumstances to match the frequency or vibration that created those defenses in the first place. In other words, defenses are very distracting and draining. When we have access to all of our power without any of it being drained or diverted to defense systems, anything becomes possible. Anything!

The only way that I know to become completely and permanently defenseless requires the acquisition of Spiritual Power. The possession of this power gives a person powers, gifts and abilities that lie far outside the perceived boundaries of most people at this time.

If one is defenseless, then one is very powerfully connected to her intuition. There are two aspects to this. First, there is no power being diverted from intuitive faculties. One’s intuition is fully-connected and fully charged. Second, the effectiveness and power of one’s intuitive ability increases because there is nothing to hinder the defenseless person’s intuition. The defenseless person sees reality transparently. It is like supercharged, x-ray vision. Unlike Superman, a defenseless person can even see through lead and substances with much higher densities! In this state a person has the ability to sense threats and opportunities very clearly, allowing her to make the most of the available opportunities and minimize the impact of (or completely avoid!) potential threats.

For many of you what I am writing about may seem impossible. It’s okay to think that. I am writing this to give you hope, to inspire you to believe that you may not need to be bound by fears and the defenses they create. You don’t need to be on your guard ever or forever! Your defenses actually make you less safe and secure because they attract what you don’t want and make it more difficult to see threats before they arrive! You can be totally and completely free to be your true self, do what you are here to do, and to love yourself and others with complete and total abandon. I’m planting seeds so that they may grow in your consciousness, eventually manifesting their glorious fullness in time. If something can be perceived, it can be achieved! If only one person perceives something, then it is possible for anyone to perceive it. Defenselessness is not exempt from these laws of life! Seek that which will make defenses unnecessary!

I recently had an interesting conversation with a gentleman about fear. This man shared with me some of his thoughts on fear. He had been taught that being fearless (literally unafraid) would get him killed. He happens to work in law enforcement and has received a lot of training from many people over the years on how to stay alive and not get dead.

Every single person had taught him that being unafraid would get him killed very quickly. He took this advice to heart and decided to be afraid in going about his law enforcement work.

He shared with me a story of recently transferring a prisoner who had received a life sentence. The man was in the back of his car, and asked for one last thing before being taken to prison, Kentucky Fried Chicken. The officer, who knew that doing this could cost him his job and even get him killed, considered the request. He granted the man with a life sentence his wish. He took him to KFC and bought him a two piece meal, standing ready for when this man’s friends came into the store to kill him. He had the man hurry up and finish the chicken and get back into the car for the rest of the trip to prison.

This cop was terrified during this whole story. He was afraid of being shot. He was afraid of losing his job should what he did become known. He had been taught that his terror was what was going to keep him alive.

What if none of this was necessary? What if he could have been fearless in this circumstance? What could have been different?

Here’s what I know for sure.

If this man was fearless, he could have known what this man’s true intentions were: to set a trap to make a break for freedom, or to have food that reminded him of the joy and freedom of being a kid again).

If this man was fearless, he could have been at peace at KFC and really soaked in the wonderful compassion of what he offered this man out of the generosity of his real and true heart. He could have taken his time, sensed very clearly whether there were any threats, and allowed this man to heat his chicken and really savor the moment.

People think that their fears keep them safe. Wrong! Our fears keep us in fear and attract the very circumstances that cause us to feel fear and react out of that fear.

Robert Frost wrote, “There’s nothing I’m afraid of like scared people.” I know why he said it. It’s time for each and every one of us to release every fear we carry around to keep ourselves safe, even the fear of scared people!
