I am going to a graveside service for the spouse of a friend of mine today. I’d like to take this occasion to reflect a bit upon this thing that we call death, and some of the blessings that flow from it.

Death is such a rich metaphor that I will only touch on a few aspects here.

Whenever a person leaves her biological body, I am reminded about my own biological mortality. While I will not put God in a box and say that people cannot live for eternity in bio-bodies, I just don’t look forward to the relative encumbrance of spending eternity inside a body that doesn’t move very fast or travel very well in the cosmic sense.

Death is a powerful reminder to me to make the most of whatever life in a bio-body I have left. The best way that I know how to do this is to live a completely fearless life. And while I’m not quite fearless yet, I’m so close to it that I am greatly looking forward to the unstopability that is just around the bend for those of us who have made fearlessness one of our goals in this life. How do one stop a completely fearless person from accomplishing his or her goals? You can’t. That excites me!

Death is also a wonderful reminder that the essential aspects of a person are not biological in nature. We are not our genes, facial features, or anything else that can be perceived by the biological body’s senses. What makes us who we are can only be perceived through the more subtle aspects of a person such as the soul and the spirit-body’s emotional center.

Whenever people leave their bio-bodies, it is also a wonderful reminder of the impermanence of matter. The material world exists so that we can experience eternity in particular ways. One of its greatest gifts is the ability to see the power of our intentions, feelings, and thoughts to create reality at a much slower pace than happens in the more refined energetic dimensions of the cosmos. We get to focus on something and see what flows from that sustained focus.

Many people don’t see life this way yet, but it is coming. We are speeding past second base on our way to third in appreciating the fact that the world has the challenges it has because of a persistent and sustained focus on our fears.

One fear that we are preparing to release is the fear of death. There is a lot of information available on what happens when people die. The main idea is that what makes a person a person continues to exist after the death of the bio-body. When enough people come to know this truth, we will have turned an important corner in this age.

Once this is accomplished, people will receive the opportunity to release the fear behind the fear of biological death—the fear of the annihilation of individual consciousness. Most people don’t yet realize that this is the deepest fear of every human being. This fear will ultimately be conquered as well. But that topic requires a bit more than a blog post. For now, you’re going to have to trust me on this one.

I am going to share something with you that has taken me a long time to learn. But if you apply it to your own daily habits and practices, your life will take off in ways that you cannot imagine.

One way to look at human beings is through what I call the four levels of power. I have continually found these four distinctions to be incredibly useful in my life. They are probably not new to most of you:

• Physical
• Mental
• Emotional
• Spiritual

These realms of power have been listed in ascending order of relative frequency, meaning that the energies associated with each level are increasingly refined, and therefore more powerful, as you go down the list.

Think of how much more powerful an atomic bomb is compared to a stick of dynamite. The atom bomb derives its power from forces that operate at the atomic level (relatively more refined). The dynamite derives its power from the molecular/chemical level of energy (relatively less refined). As another example, who makes more money? Is it the construction workers who are actually building a skyscraper or the people who envisioned the skyscraper in the first place?

This understanding of relative frequency has been absolutely huge for me. I have found that spending time and effort in developing habits and applying disciplines to these four levels of power in accordance with their relative frequencies has helped me to transform my entire life.

I emphasize working consciously on all four levels of power because of my personal experiences. For a long time, I just focused on developing the soul level of my being (the subtlest level of power yet discovered) and applied spiritual disciplines to that level of my being exclusively. I believed that that the other levels of power would soon fall into line as I worked exclusively on developing my soul.

Well, I found that (while there was a lot of truth to this belief) I had made a significant error in my interpretation of Jesus’ teaching to “seek first [God’s] kingdom…” (Matthew 6:33 NIV). For a very long time, I interpreted this to say, “seek only [God’s] kingdom…” And while I am grateful that I created such a strong soul foundation, once I started consciously incorporating disciplines related to the emotional, mental and physical realms of power, my life really took off in incredible ways. I want the same for you.

So please, please, please in your habits and disciplines give your time and attention to the development of your four realms of power in accordance to their relative frequencies! By this I mean that you more give time and focused attention to each realm of power’s relative frequency increases. Take consistent daily actions with regard to these four energies of your life, and you will see your life become a constant stream of incredible miracles!
